Define endangered species

endangered species. A plant or animal that is in danger of becoming extinct through loss of habitat, habitat degradation, over hunting or harvesting, or other reasons. In the United States, animals and plants are added to the Endangered Species List by the Fish and Wildlife Service, part of the Department of the Interior.
